They Are All Dropping Like Flies...Except Trump

United States culture is changing. No longer are we going to tolerate men treating women like they are second class citizens, property, and objects for their childish, sexual desires. Over the course of the last several months we've seen Roger Ailes, Bill O' Reilly, and Harvey Weinstein all go away because they harassed and sexually assaulted/abused various women. The most recent harasser is MSNBC's Mark Halperin. I've been a pretty big fan of his over the last decade and was pretty shocked when the revelations about him came out.

In contrast, we still see the Misogynist in Chief in the Oval Office and I find that interesting for a number of reasons. It's very likely that there are many women out there who have been harassed, assaulted and abused by Donald Trump. Why haven't they come forward? Are these other guys merely low hanging fruit?

Perhaps they are afraid given that he is the president and maybe they are concerned over what it might do to the country. Regardless, I think it's only a mater of time before someone or several someones come forward. My hope is that it's right around the time we find out Trump and his team worked with the Russians to win the election.

Yet even if no one comes forward, Trump's world of being able to grab women by the pussy is shrinking rapidly. Men exhibiting similar behavior to what he has done over the years have been fired and shunned from every day society. That type of bullshit is simply no longer tolerated. There is no doubt that Trump's presidency is having an adverse affect on many areas of our culture but this is not one of them. In fact, I think his being elected has hastened a change that has been a long time in coming.

Women are equal to men and should be respected.

Emotional Intelligence

Last night, one of the dads from my son’s baseball team said to me, “Hey, your wife is really hot.” I replied, “I know” and went on with my evening.

A little bit later another dad came up to me and asked me if I was OK. I was puzzled.

“Why?”
“Well, Jim (not his real name) said your wife was hot.”
“So? I know she’s hot.”
“That’s YOUR wife. He shouldn’t talk that way about another man’s wife.”

I laughed and told him it really didn’t bother me. He was then offended that I wasn’t more offended and walked away shaking his head.

Marriages are partnerships. People aren’t possessions. And, husbands, if you are so fucking insecure that you can’t take a compliment about the wives you love and adore, then you have some serious issues to deal with in terms of emotional intelligence.

What Do Women Want?

According to this book, it's SEX. And they are very hungry for it!! In what would make a great stocking stuffer this year, author Daniel Bergner writes about how our view of women is all backwards.

Bergner, and the leading sex researchers he interviews, argue that women’s sexuality is not the rational, civilized and balancing force it’s so often made out to be — that it is base, animalistic and ravenous, everything we’ve told ourselves about male sexuality. As one researcher tells Bergner of all the restrictions put on female sexuality: “Those barriers are a testament to the power of the drive itself. It’s a pretty incredible testament. Because the drive must be so strong to override all of that.”

“Women’s desire — its inherent range and innate power — is an underestimated and constrained force, even in our times, when all can seem so sexually inundated, so far beyond restriction,” he writes. “Despite the notions our culture continues to imbue, this force is not, for the most part, sparked or sustained by emotional intimacy and safety.” In fact, he argues, “one of our most comforting assumptions, soothing perhaps above all to men but clung to by both sexes, that female eros is much better made for monogamy than the male libido, is scarcely more than a fairy tale.”

I agree and my first hand experience tells me that this is certainly the case. Our society needs to throw our preconceived and male centered views of sexuality out the window. 2000+ years is more than enough, thank you very much!

Good Point

Dustin Hoffman makes a good point in the video below about how women are still unfortunately perceived in our culture.

And It Continues

Republicans just can't seem to stop talking about their views on women. They simply can't resist letting slip their true feelings on the place of women in our society.

“I’m so used to liberals telling conservatives that they’re anti-science,” Erickson explained. “But liberals who defend this and say it is not a bad thing are very anti-science. When you look at biology, when you look at the natural world, the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role.”

“We as people in a smart society have lost the ability to have complimentary relationships in nuclear families, and it is tearing us apart,” he continued, adding that “reality showed” it was harmful for women to be the primary source of income in a family.

Fox News contributor Doug Schoen concluded the freak out by claiming all these so-called breadwinner moms “could undermine our social order.”

Wow. I guess they really don't want to hold on to the House in 2014. More amusing, though, is his doubling down.

Pro-science liberals seem to think basic nature and biology do not apply to Homo sapiens. Men can behave like women, women can behave like men, they can raise their kids, if they have them, in any way they see fit, and everything will turn out fine in the liberal fantasy world.

The only fantasy world being bandied about here is the one that Erickson thinks still exists. I'll never understand the perpetual "Golden Age" thinking trap in which the Right seems to be ensnared. They see any sort of change as a threat to a fantasy that never existed in in the first place.

How Do We See Ourselves?

Take a look at this video from Dove...

It's truly amazing to me how so many women look upon themselves so negatively. What is it about culture that drives them to do this? It's not just advertising or Hollywood.

Nor is it just women. The next time you are in a group of people try this experiment. Tell a story about how you fucked something up and watch everyone laugh along with you. Then tell a story about how great you are at something and listen for the crickets. Maybe you might get one person that gives you some props but for the most part, we cheer self deprecation and jeer self affirmation.

I don't get it.
