The Bird's Eye View

In the cinema classic, Citizen Kane, the character of Charles Foster Kane (left) makes a statement to the characters of Jedediah Leland and Mr. Bernstein. He calls it his Declaration of Principles in which he promises the readers of his newspapers that his will be THE source of the reality of the world. In that same spirit, I would to make that pledge to all of you.

And, to also tell you, Notes From The Front is going to change.

All of you may have noticed some evidence of this already. First, the tag line now reads "where politics, sex, and religion are always polite to discuss." I want to officially announce that this is a place where you can freely talk about these three subjects without being muzzled by uptight assholes. It drives me loony when people say that it is "impolite" to talk about this stuff. To me, they are probably the most important and interesting things to discuss. So, since people in our culture (particularly my intensely rigid home state of Minnesota) aren't allowed to have passionate opinions anymore (without being accused of being loony), this blog is now officially open for all who wish to shout to the highest mountain tops. Please feel free to let it all hang out, if you will, in these key subject areas.

In addition, starting this week I am going to write shorter columns in the hopes that more people will leave comments and we can have a more interactive discussion. I want to try this for a few weeks and see how it goes. If you have ever wanted to leave a comment, now is the time. It can be as short or as long as you want. You do NOT have to use your real name. Have fun with it and make up a fake name! This is your big chance, guys, you can pretend to be a woman! And ladies...well...most of you that I know act like men most of the time anyway so it won't be much of a difference.

I also want to keep the columns shorter because they can then stay more current. There are many interesting things that happen in the news everyday so it might not be uncommon to see 2 or 3 short pieces a week. I won't be sending out that many email announcements so check back to the blog frequently and, as always, forward the web site address to any friends that you might think would like to join in. There are also going to be guest columnists so if you ever want to write something, send it to me and, more than likely, I will put it up.

In the coming weeks, I will be talking a lot about the 2006 election. This is going to be a big one, folks, and you can rely on Notes From The Front to give you all of the latest poop. And believe me, there is going to be a lot of poop in the next few weeks that is going to be flying around and Notes will be a great locale to watch it soar.

So, all of that being said let's dive in with this week's topic. Looking down on our country from a bird's eye view, it seems like a pretty fucked up place right now. We are sharply divided into three categories: conservatives, liberals, and apolitical. It is unfortunate that the last category of people make up the bulk of the population. Since around 50 percent of eligible voters actually vote, that leaves 50 percent of our public that doesn't care, sits around on their ass, takes the time to vote for American Idol, and watches NASCAR....never caring a wit about how their world is being shaped.

Lately, I have received much flack from conservatives regarding my "condescending" opinion. I suppose the last sentence in the above paragraph could be viewed as elitist but what is with the "I don't want no fancy book learning" trend that has swept the country in the last few years? Don't people want to make themselves smarter? Better through knowledge? I don't think it is condescending to point that out to people.

To me what IS condescending is a bunch of rich white men sitting around in a room figuring out which is the largest most easily manipulated group of people in the country to help them win elections and thus, remain in control of our country's wealth and power. They have chosen the religious right and small business owners. The first group is the easiest to manipulate. Conservative leaders throw out various moral "wedge" issues, act as God passing judgment on the rest of us heathens, and bam!....you have 20 million or so voters. You hit the second group with the fear that their livelihood is going to be taken away (as if it isn't already with conservative leaders controlling all the wealth anyway) and now you have a decent base. Throw in the group of people that don't care and guess what you have? 75 percent of the United States of America in the year 2006!

There is so much information out there that I think many people go into overload and just shut down. There are also people, the majority of which are conservatives and their vast media network, that just flat out lie. Call them on that lie and you are condescending. Whatever. I don't have time for that irresponsible bullshit anymore or more importantly, WE should not take the time to listen to that irresponsible bullshit anymore. When I hear someone say that don't care about politics and they never vote (as a young woman did in my class last week), I cringe. Don't they realize how important voting is? Especially at a local level, elections shape the way we live our lives and our children's futures. What possible way is there to get through to these people? There has to be a way, that is not condescending, that can wake people up and get them involved even if it is just at a local level.

So, the question is...what is that way? There isn't much time left, folks, and we need all the help we can get to stop our country from going in the wrong direction and get it back on track.

If there is a God, the Republicans will lose control of the Congress in this next election. Republican Congressman Mark Foley's homosexual solicitations of teenaged pages over a period of four years should alert conservative voters that the Republicans have no moral basis to lead this country at all.

The House leadership knew all about his advances, and Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert had known about it for at least a year. The FBI received Instant Message communications between Foley and a former page in July. And did nothing.

While the Republicans in Congress were screaming about gay marriage, they ignored the potential homosexual predator among their own ranks.

The Washington Times, a conservative newspaper, has called for Hastert's resignation. This is an attempt to stem the outrage across the country. By sacrificing Hastert, they hope to assuage voter anger over yet another Republican scandal and prevent the loss of Congress to the Democrats.

In his defense, Hastert repeated the constant Republican litany: "I was duped..." Republicans are constantly being duped: Mark Foley, Curveball, Ahmed Chalabi, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong Il, Jack Abramoff, George Tenet, Osama Bin Laden, Hassan Nasrallah, even hurricane Katrina! The list is endless.

How can we trust these guys to lead the country when anyone can pull one over on them? They must be totally incompetent, incapable of judging anyone's character or intentions, or even paying attention when they are told simple facts like "the levees in New Orleans will be breached." Or they are lying. And as incompetent as they seem to be, no one at that level can possibly be this stupid and inept. The only possible conclusion is that they are lying and were in on it.

Another small example: The White House had previously claimed it might have a dozen or so contacts with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. But, according to their own records, the number was more like 400. In fact, Abramoff's secretary went to work as Karl Rove's executive secretary, after which Rove told Abramoff that if Abramoff needed anything he should go through her.

Even the most stalwart conservatives must now admit the entire Republican power structure has become totally corrupt.

Couldn't have said it better myself. But their is one thing you have overlooked. I believe that if President Bush said that we had to sacrafice the lives of 100 innocent children to win the War on Terror, there would still be 20 percent (at least) of this country that would go along with it. That is how fucking brainwashed these people are into believing their cause.

You said it yourself, BLK, they are using the model of the Goebbels and Hitler to win the support of unbelievably blind people to vote them into office. Their corruption goes beyond simple "sleazy politics." The loss of life in Iraq is utterly naseauting....with millions of Americans hoodwinked into believing that this somehow protects them.

Hey, how about this...lets get rid of computer voting machines? How about we condescend to the technology of the past and use paper ballots that must be kept in a locked vault for 4 years after the election is over? One reason people don't vote is because they feel that their vote isn't worth the bytes that it was created on. Diebold has lost court battles in California, exit polls in contested AND non-contested districts were completely different from the official polls, some districts did not have enough machines in Ohio and Florida. Lets talk voter reform as a booster shot against voter apathy.

How about another idea...a non-partisan organization put together information pamphlets on candidates that highlight voting records and official platforms? It is tough for the common person to have any in-depth understanding of a candidate when all they have are 30 second clips put together by professional media spin-doctors.

Here's a real chestnut for you all...how about teaching civics and government in middle school and high school so that people actually know what their responsibilities will be as citizens and tax payers? How about reinforcing those concepts on television, newspaper, radio and internet before each election? A canned lecture starring Hollywood's best and brightest would be a step in the right direction.

We get the government we deserve. If we let people cheat on elections, we are still getting what we deserve. People should be rioting in the streets over what happened in 2000 and 2004. But they don't because they aren't sure what happened. The government in this country has become too entrenched and too comfortable. A little anarchy would be good for the citizens and remind them how this whole thing got started. Accountability doesn't come cheap and it is what is needed most right now.

Mark Foley should be sent to jail and have Bubba as a cell mate. You'll get no argument from me on that. Know that for every Mark Foley you guys find I'll find a Mel Reynolds. You know, that Democrat from Illinois who actually had sex with one of his underage pages in 1995. Now is Mel's actions an accurate measure of Democratic leadership throughout the 90's? Not hardly.

"Muzzled by uptight assholes"... since I’m damn sure I’m included in that...perhaps you just need to know that many people don’t think about GWB as much as you do and don’t need to be "educated". You react with disgust (see: Ron Hurd) when you hear of anyone voting a different way than you do. I’m not the only one who thinks that way, other people do too...many are too polite to say anything. For example, do you reeeeealy think that Tina and Amy were ready to, say, have a heated 60 minute political discussion after that movie on Sunday? I’m sure you would have enjoyed it but you weren’t the only one there.

It’s not impolite to talk about those things. It is impolite to keep bringing it up and bringing it up (even 3 times in one day…see Paul Beadel) when said person has made it clear that they don’t care what your opinions are.

Nobody said you can’t have passionate opinions about things. Maybe you should look in the mirror to see why some people don’t want to discuss politics with you. You’ve made it perfectly clear (only in recent years) that there is only 1 side to any debate you engage in – your side.

You want to know what is condescending? Here’s just a few comments you yourself have typed on this very blog...

“I care enough to point at the sheer and utter hypocrisy of NCDs and their brain dead Christian Conserative supporters.”

“the reason why evangelicals vote Republican is because they have been brainwashed”

“If you took the time to read the "other side," as you put it, then you might learn something.”

“I don't consider myself to be "better" than most neocons...just more informed and by extension, more intelligent.”

“So, while all you chuckleheads out there in zombie land are drinking Busch Light and firing your guns into the air to our "victory" in Iraq”

“Pardon me while I LAUGH MY ASS OFF FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER AT THIS COMPLETELY FUCKING IGNORANT, MOUTH-BREATHING POINT OF VIEW!!!”

“Would you please put down the kool aid they are feeding you and start to think about statements like that?”

“They are a group of paranoid, fear-mongers who can't get it up without their guns.”

“They are content to swill Busch light, watch fucking NASCAR”

“most of the people that have guns in this country are FUCKING MORONS and will end up shooting themselves or someone they love.”

“Most folks on the right are going to put their blinders on and only listen to the one source”

“I couldn't help but wonder what happened to her in her life to have such an enormous anti-information filter in place. Was it fear? For the first time, since I can remember, I did not yell at neocon and call them an idiot” followed by “her head is filled with propaganda”

“I think that the people that say that are full of shit. But it is their ignorance of the facts that got us into this mess in the first place. And I think that they are, quite simply, sore losers who can't admit when they are wrong"

“I don't see how anyone, in the face of all logic and facts, could have another viewpoint about Bush Co.”

“Wisconsin, in its every expanding vision of making itself even more like a southern state”

“Of course, most NRA pussies would probably shart themselves if saw any real kind of action and are quite happy and content to fantasize about killing their neighborhood niggers than actually doing something brave like serving their country.” (speaking of anti-information filters, I still loved it when Alan posted the fact that “NRA's Eddie Eagle program teaches children pre-K through 6th grade that if they see a firearm without supervision, they should "STOP! Don't Touch. Leave The Area. Tell An Adult." Since 1988, the program has been used by more than 22,000 schools, civic groups, and law enforcement agencies to reach 18 million children.” I’m guessing you still have the same views as you did before about the Eddie Eagle program though even though gun deaths in big cities where liberals run everything is 10 times higher than the rural areas you stereotype and insult).

I think I discovered the main difference between you and I last weekend. My dad and I were bass fishing on a lake and it was opening day of duck season. Shooting time starts late on the first day and we were done fishing by the time shooting time had started. We could see the hunters setting up their decoys, positioning their blinds, and so on. I did a lot of duck hunting growing up and I could see these people making all kinds of errors. Some had their blinds facing the sun, hence they would have to battle the sun every time they shot at a duck. Some had their decoys downwind from where they set up their blind. Waterfowl always land into the wind so you always want to set your decoys upsind from where you set your duck blind up. The biggest mistake we saw was hunters setting up their decoys right next to their blind, some even had decoys up on a pole and the pole was set up in their blind, hence the decoy was right above their blind. Hunters set up decoys in the hopes that the ducks will see the decoys and decide to land. Putting the decoys close to your duckblind makes no sense at all because ducks will notice any movement or strange colors and will fly away immediately.

We even talked to some of the hunters from our boat. Here’s the key - we didn’t bother correcting them, we didn’t call them idiots, and we didn’t think less of them. We just figured “You know what – those guys are going to get some shooting in today and have a great time doing it” and some things are better left unsaid. Same attitude I have toward Nascar these days – it doesn’t appeal to me one bit but the people who are going to the race are there having a great time and enjoying life.

Michael Savage has multiple PhD’s. Does that make him more intelligent than you?

Simply because your ideals cannot be proven wrong does not make them right. Most of the tricks of logic and debate refute questions and attacks, but fail to establish any true justification for a given idea.

For example, just because you can’t prove that I’m not the king of France reincarnated doesn’t make it so. So when you say “My plan A is the best because no one has explained how it will fail” know that there is a logical gap in this argument. Simply because no one has described how it will fail doesn’t necessarily make it the best plan. It’s possible that plans B, C, D and E all have the same quality, or that the reason no one has described how A will fail is that it simply hasn’t been tried in a capitalist economy.

Part of being a truly smart person is to know which level is the right one at a given time. For example, if you are skidding out of control at 95mph in your broken down Winnebago on an ice covered interstate when a semi-truck filled with both poorly packaged fireworks and loosely bundled spark plugs heading right toward you slams on its brakes, it’s not the right time to discuss with your passengers where y’all would like to stop for dinner. But as ridiculous as this scenario sounds, it happens all the time. People worry about the wrong thing at the wrong time and apply their intelligence in ways that doesn’t serve the greater good of whatever they’re trying to achieve (see: Markadelphia’s need to insult anyone who disagrees with him...see above quotes). Some call this difference in skill wisdom, in that the wise know what to be thinking about, where as the merely intelligent only know how to think.

Alright, Crab. We are going to end this once and for all. You, thus far, are the only person that has a problem with me talking about politics a lot. No one else has said anything to me so I only have your word to go on. If Paul Beadel or anyone else has a problem with me, then you should tell them to talk to me. If I don't hear anything from them, then I am going to take what you say as the bias of someone who is pissed off and can't admit that the people that they voted for are scumbags. I think you should flat out ask Tina and Amy what they thought about the evening. We saw a political movie (The US vs. John Lennon) and talked about it over a drink afterwards. That's what people do when they see any movie. We then spent a good deal of time after that talking about pooping. Because you are extra-sensitive now anytime I bring up politics (again, because you can't admit how awful the people that you voted for are turning out to be)the rest of the evening's conversation is forgotten.

Bill Clinton had concentual sex with an adult so where is the comparison here? Mel Reynolds went to jail for his crimes. So, he deserved what he got. It's not suprising to me that the Republicans have a child abuser in their party. So, you can add that to the list of treason, murder, larceny, libel, perjury. If you want to be "open minded," and see their side of the story, then you are no different than the liberals that you call weak on crime.

The real problem here is that anytime I am critical of the right, the discussion quickly turns to me and my so called faults in how I look at the world. I am one minded...I am stubborn...blah blah blah...and it makes my opinions seem less valid. You can list off all the quotes that you want about me but everyday my "opinion" becomes more and more shared and more and more true. For every negative comment you send me about my view, I get five positive ones by both Democrats and Republicans alike.

I think you take advantage of my need for constant self-actualization and somehow the conversation stays on me. I challenge you to ask all of the people who give you opinions about me to give their opionions about YOUR politics and how YOU look at the world. Your continued need to tell me that other people don't like it when I talk about politics isn't going to change my mind and suddenly start defending a war that is killing 2000 innocent civilains a month AND not doing anything at all to actually protect us against terrorism.

And your comparison to me speaking out about the abomination that is our current government to people making a few mistakes while duck hunting is tremendously insensitive. We are talking about people's lives here being lost as direct result of our leadership's incompetence, arrogance, and downright lawlessness. So, perhaps I make the mistake of insutling people's intelligence but it is only becasue my absolute nausea, at people who actually defend this behavior, tends to make me somewhat irrational. Sorry....

I'm not pissed off. Anyone who reads my posts can see that I'm not as pissed off as you are about things. I'm the only one that posts on here on a regular basis that, on a regular basis, mentions the tremendous standard of living we all have here compared to the rest of the world. The quotes I posted above are from you. I challenge you to find an equal number of insults coming from me on this blog toward the other side of the political spectrum.

Most of your reply focused on only 1 of my paragraphs.

I think you missed the point of my referencing the conversation after the movie. I enjoyed the conversation afterward because we talked about so many other things other than politics. It's just a hunch that I have that the other parties there might have gotten a bit bored if you and I start going back and forth about politics for 45 minutes. You and I talked politics before the movie and everything was cool with that conversation. I'm not extra-sensitive, it's just that I really don't feel like being insulted, called "intolerant", be told to defend hypotheticals that noone in their right mind could defend, etc. You've made it perfectly clear that there is no other side of the debate and when there is no other side to the debate (see: “I don't see how anyone, in the face of all logic and facts, could have another viewpoint about Bush Co.”) there is no point in debating anymore.

The "comparison" with Mel Reynolds is that his actions had nothing to do with the Democrats ability to lead this country int he mid-90's. Even getting rid of Foley and Hastert isn't enough for blk...he seems to think things like this are the ticket to getting Republicans out of office (for the record blk, many people were also told "Get out of here, there's a hurricane coming").

The comments I posted were things I would think that an educated person with a firm grasp of the issues who is comfortable in his positions and beliefs wouldn't have to resort to.

I don't care what anyone around me thinks about my politics. Most people around me, this includes acquaintances in the volleyball community (not the circle of friends we all hang out with), all the guys I play softball with and against, the people I know at the gym, many former co-workers, my current co-workers, people I see at metal shows around town, have no idea what my politics are, mainly because I have no "tests" I run on them and I have no desire to get them to vote the way I do. They can make up their own mind on things because I don't think the sky is falling. I'm not trying to change your mind, just suggesting to you that insulting people, as you do on this blog, isn't really the best way to go about things. You make accusations that Republicans are planting kiddie porn on political opponents computers, then tell us to prove you wrong. Ummm, no thanks.

Saying that our current government is an abomination doesn't have anything to do with the comparison I made. It has to do with refusing to acknowledge anyone elses viewpoint as valid other than your own. It isn't fair for me to make that comparison but it's perfectly Ok for you to say, on this blog, that I would have no problem with a policeman raping a woman. On this blog you also said "Sorry but I can't be tolerant of Hitler. Kudos to you if you can be". How does it feel to have a "tremendously insensitive" comparison directed at you?

Saying that it is a mistake and somewhat irrational to insult entire regions of the country, entire voting blocks of people or people you happen to disagree with is cool in my book. I'll burn you a Slayer CD.

Mark Ward said...

Let me try to put this another way. And this is a specific point in regards to an educated opinion vs an uneducated one. I don't know anything about softball. I know it is similar to baseball but there are certain strategies that are specific only to softball. An example of this would be that when a batter gets a base hit and there are runners on base, I would think you would throw home to try to prevent a run as in baseball but as you have told me you throw to second. This is something you have learned through experience. I, not having had the experience of playing softball as much as you, would not understand this.

Now imagine if I went around and started talking to people about how you should always throw home in softball in that situation. You are there and you tell me that is not a good idea because of your experience....of what you know to be true. I refuse to believe you and grind my feet in because that's what I believe. I then proceeed to organize my own softball team and lose many games because I am too stubborn to realize that someone with more experience might know more than me. My opinon is seriously flawed, has no basis in logic or fact, and is wholly uninformed.

That is how I feel about politics. I know more about it than most people. I know more about history, empires, cultures, the human condition, current events, and the evil that men do than you do. I am intensely interested in it and study it everday. You, by your own admission, have a passing interest and spend more time thinking about other things. Is your opinion valid? Of course. So is mine in softball. But that opinion is incredibly narrow minded and lacking in forward thought. With our political discussion, you can keep on telling yourself that I am the one that is close minded but that is what a close minded person, who refuses to look at their own short-sightedness, would say.

I listen and experience he neocon point of view on a daily basis and it is nothing short of frightening. People that I rip for being conservative are filled with such an unfounded hate, biased propaganda, and complete lack of understanding for liberals. Most (but not all) discussions I have with a neocon usually goes the same way: I bring up facts that directly refute their point of view. They quickly see that I am more knowledgeable than they are and then they play the "elitist" liberal card and my argument is invalidated.

Do you see what is happening here? Conservatives want to keep people stupid. They accuse educators of being liberal, the media being liberal, liberals as evil....and so the only source of information left is them: the government. The day we all start listening to the government exclusively for our facts is the day we might as well put ourselves in human pens akin to cattle. Some people already do this so I say things like they are fucking idiots to shock them into waking up. It's called tough love, baby, and in our short attention span society, it works more often than not. 50 percent of us are horribly apathetic and that was my original point in the post. I believe if this 50 percent were interested, educated, engaged in politics then our leaders would be better people. We would elect good, decent men who would act in the best interest of our country not for the sake of power and greed. We would help the world to be a better place.

I also think you are sorely mistaken when it comes to how I disagree with people. I disagree with Adam on a number of things but I think we need people like him to look at the human side. Adam is more liberal than I am when it comes to things like the Israeli-Palestinian thing and I don't rip him for being a wimp. Everyone's opinions are valid...it's just a matter of how informed they are. I think you are fairly informed but you lack a historical context with which to have a more well rounded opinion. You have a tremendous bias against liberals. You criticize me for being cruel and crazily obsessed and yet you listen to Michael Savage...someone who greatly surpasses me in both of those categories.

The biggest hurdle for you is that you can't admit when you are wrong. It's not suprising to me, really, because the people you support are the same way. At least in your case your stubborn attitude is not costing people their lives. I also think, for all you who have beefed that these comments turn into and personal argument between me and Crab, that these discussions are representative of the divide in our culture and are thus, very pertinent. We get to the heart of many things here and I really enjoy it.

Indeed your softball strategy would be extremely flawed. Know that I would not say anything to you about the flaws in your softball game unless you asked me what you were doing wrong and I certainly wouldn’t think any less of you just like I don’t think any less of the handful of teams that we pound by 25 runs every summer. I’m not any better than them and they aren’t any better than me – they just play softball on a different level than I do and their losses have nothing to do with me. I mean I don’t think you know very much about cars...that has nothing to do with me and I don’t think you’re an idiot because of it.

I am very interested in politics (as anyone can tell by reading my posts) and I do read up on the issues of the day – I just don’t try to convert all the people around me into voting the way I do. It also doesn’t dominate my life the way it seems to dominate yours...you mean you can’t spend 3 hours a week with someone without feeling muzzled simply because you can’t mention George Bush during those 3 hours?

I never said you were close-minded.

Plenty of facts have been brought up on the blog refuting several of your points of view also yet you still argue passionately for your issues. I’m not the only one on here who has questioned your definition of “fact”.

Conservatives accuse liberals of being evil? Merits of the statements aside, how is that any different than you accusing conservatives of being evil?

If you are so secure in your positions, there should be no need to call anyone a “fucking idiot”. John Waxey and pbl don’t do that.

Just because I listen to Michael Savage does not mean I endorse everything he says.

I’m still not sure why you think that me not being able to admit when I’m wrong has anything to do with you. I’ve explained why I vote republican and the reasons involve so much more than the war in Iraq. You think that my 1 vote is directly affecting the welfare of your children...I mean you’ve said on this blog that your daughter is going to “have religion forced on her in school” simply because the words “Under God” is included in the pledge. I’m guessing that you, pbl, John, Adam, Just Dave, and everyone else that posts here said “Under God” while in school when we were young. Somehow, we all turned out just fine and the nation survived…just some historical context for ya.

IMO, the real world is not played out in the comfortable confines of a classroom. It would be wonderful if every decision that was made in the world was made in a classroom. But sometimes you have to react quickly and everyone else has a lifetime to debate the issue in retrospect. And far too many people look at the impact of a decision rather than the possible consequences of the opposite decision.

One of the reasons that I became a conservative is that I realized that the world that the supposed "thinkers" were talking about did not mesh with the real world around me. What sounds good in theory frequently is a complete failure in reality (see Communism, Government control of entire industries, entitlement programs, and so on). When someone disagrees with you, you call them a fucking idiot and assume that they are not educated enough or smart enough to know any better. That is what one does when they don’t have the high ground. Just my opinion.

Since people are tired of you and I going over this stuff on here, I’ll stop posting stuff like this on here and I’ll stick to issues from here on out. Go ahead and think that the reason I’m reminding you of your obsession is because I’m somehow realizing that the people I vote for are scumbags. I know that is not the reason and that’s all that matters to me, others can think what they want.

An aide to Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer was recently convicted(not accused, convicted) of illegally pulling the credit report of Republican candidate for Maryland Senate Michael Steele. Scumbags all around. At times, it sure seems like, whatever way we vote, us regular people out here will still be last in line at the gang bang.

HMHC - I have to respectfully disagree with you on one point. I did, in fact, say "Under God" in school. But I didn't turn out OK. Just look at me. I still can't go near a church without fear of the big bolt. I thought Greg the Bunny was the funniest show on TV. And I actually voted for Jesse Ventura.

Markadelphia - it was probably I that called you close-minded. I stand by that assertion. Anybody who thinks that baseball is the "one true sport" is clearly not absorbing all the facts. To borrow phraseology from you and blk, there is no other possible way to interpret that.
