Gallup: More Americans Favor Stricter Gun Laws

Tired of being held hostage by the American Taliban? Well, you're not the only one.  More Americans favor stricter gun laws and it's not just them. More gun owners want stricter laws as well. Perhaps some are beginning to see the writing on the wall...

The greatest threat to our national security right now is the fucking Gun Cult. As we have done with international extremists, our own local nutjobs need to be taken out. In many ways, this is a form of sedition and they need to be held accountable for their actions.

Criminals, incompetent dolts and emotionally unstable individuals should not be able to own guns. Everyone -- even the NRA -- agrees on that.

The problem is, people change. For example, a person who starts out as a rock-solid citizen can turn into a sputtering maniac after he's lost his job, his wife, his children and his dignity. Some turn to crime. Others become depressed and suicidal.

These fluctuations in personality aren't necessarily permanent. People can change for the better as well.

But when such people have guns they all too often succumb to the allure of power and simplicity that guns have that other weapons and means simply do not. Just stand back, pull a trigger and all your worries are over -- it's so easy. It's not messy and up close and personal like hacking someone to bits with a knife, or scary like jumping off a bridge.

And in many states getting a gun is far easier than getting a prescription for legal drugs.

That's why concentrating on mental health can't work. Almost everyone becomes depressed or unhappy at some point in their lives. You can't possibly keep track of that many people, and we certainly don't want the government monitoring the behavior of everyone in the country, ready to swoop in and arrest depressed and lonely men who can't get laid on the off chance they might lose it and start a shooting rampage.

Guns should be restricted to competent people who need them for legitimate purposes. Like, say, the well-regulated militia of the Second Amendment.

Why, oh why, did you not mention the other Gallup poll where 56% of Americans think more concealed weapons would make people safer? It's conveniently selective blogging, don't you think? Lord knows any professor I ever had would've dinged me for leaving that out except in a rhetoric exercise (and there's a reason many ancient Greeks despised rhetoricians as professional liars, though eventually they all adopted the techniques because it's so useful on the ignorant). And the "harder" the science, the bigger the ding, up to and including automatic failure. Hint, "social sciences" aren't science, despite their pretensions.

Heck, you didn't even mention (from the poll you linked) that support for a handgun ban is at near all-time lows. Or that the firearm murder rate is at historically low levels (though rising in places such as, surprise, surprise, Baltimore and St. Louis -- any theories on why that might be happening now?).
