Yeah, 2.4% of $3.6 trillion is $86 billion. It will shut down all those rural airports in Kansas that Republican Senator Jerry Moran was so concerned about that he shut down the Senate so he could whine about it.
As he mentioned, the cuts will mean the airports will be less safe and people may be killed. Or, as Republicans would remind us of, the armed school guard in Arkansas that had to be let go might have been the one to stop the next Newtown. The same is true of the thousands of other programs, including the military, which will affect millions of people. Maybe not so dramatically that a plane will crash, but thousands of hungry kids may fail their standardized tests, flunk out, go on drugs, commit crimes and wind up in prison the rest of their lives, with the rest of us paying for their room and board.
A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon we're talking about real effects on real people.
