Voices in his Head?

I get a a lot of grief in comments for arguing with the voices (conservatives) in my head. I have a post coming soon that addresses these comments. For now, though, and because it's Sunday, check out this video.

I wonder if Stephen Colbert has voices in his head as well.

More importantly, a goal of mine has finally been achieved: "Jesus would've probably been a liberal Democrat." I've toyed with the idea of saying this but after some thought realized He wouldn't be either a Democrat or a Republican.

But the simple fact that Bernie Goldberg said it on Fox News pretty much makes my day. Recognizing the contradiction in the way Christ lived his life and the obsession the right has with the free market is the first step in realizing that being a Christian, as defined by Christ's words, and being a conservative (libertarian, evangelical or otherwise) today are mutually exclusive.

Well thank diety that you reached the only sane conclusion. There may be hope for you yet.

Just to help you out, let me clarify for you. You get a lot of grief in the comments because you argue with positions people haven't taken, and somewhat comically, you do this in the flow of a conversation with someone. It goes like this:

Me: What about A?
Mark: See, it's because of B that you are a not reflective like me.
Me: I didn't say B.
Mark: (crickets..)

This is otherwise known as battling with strawmen, and you do it well. Unfortunately for you, it's also dishonest. If you didn't have such a problem with your ego you might be able to climb down and admit it when you mischaracterize other peoples words, but given your performance to date, I'm not holding my breath.

Your God hates the unemployed.

2 Thessalonians 3:10
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

2 Timothy 2:15
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Fucking homophobic racist Nazi Christians.

You know Mark, there are a lot of issues you could have used as a comparison showing conservatives are not like Jesus. Most of them could have had some validity and may have been more or less debatable.

But using the free market as an issue? I think that the only point that observation makes is that your knowledge of Jesus and/or the free market is based upon sound bites, misapplied quotes, out of context phrases and misunderstood basic truths.

Did anyone else see the 60 Minutes piece last night on state and local governments? (The memory segment was cool too)

Here is the segment if you want to see it:

dw,

Read that again:

2 Thessalonians 3:10
For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

Do you actually think there's a problem here?

Here's another translation that might be more clear:

For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.

Sounds like conservatism to me.

Here's a note on that verse from 2nd Timothy that you might find helpful:

The Greek verb translated correctly handles really means cutting a straight road and suggests straightforward exegesis. This must be the aim of all true teachers of the word. ‘Reading into’ the text what is clearly not there is of help to nobody but is depressingly common.
— New Bible Commentary: 21st Century Edition

Again, that's a conservative principle.

Maybe you were being sarcastic, but that wasn't quite clear to me. If you were, then just slap me and I'll head back to my corner. ;-)

M has already admitted that his "god" is not the God of the Bible.
