Got Him!

This blog started as an email list back in the days immediately following the September 11th attacks as a result of trying to make sense of them. Eventually, it became this blog in May of 2005. Throughout those times, I expressed a great deal of frustration at how Osama bin Laden got away at Tora Bora and was never caught.

Yesterday, thanks to our special forces under the direction of our president, we finally got him. Osama bin Laden is dead.

Man, I've waited a long time to write that sentence. Words cannot express how I feel right now. It's been a long ten years and in so many ways I am relieved.

One of the main reasons why I supported President Obama during the election of 2008 were his assertions that he would refocus efforts on Afghanistan and Pakistan. We saw that right away with the increased drone attacks inside of Pakistan. Now, we have seen that his strategy has paid off.

Apparently, the US received intelligence that bin Laden was at a compound outside of Islamabad last August. On Friday, that intelligence was confirmed and President Obama gave the go order. Late yesterday, our time, bin Laden was shot in the head and killed along with a couple of bodyguards. His body was secured and buried at sea.

The impromptu celebrations at the White House, Times Square, and the site of the World Trade Center warmed my heart. Although we quibble often in this country, at times like this we can see how united we truly are.

This is a major victory for all of us, folks. We should all be proud!

Officials say CIA interrogators in secret overseas prisons developed the first strands of information that ultimately led to the killing of Osama bin Laden.
Current and former U.S. officials say that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, provided the nom de guerre of one of bin Laden’s most trusted aides. The CIA got similar information Mohammed’s successor, Abu Faraj al-Libi. Both were subjected to harsh interrogation tactics inside CIA prisons in Poland and Romania.

Still think Bush's policies are "evil"?

No bias on that source, huh? We don't really know the whole story as to how they got him but it will be interesting to see in the coming days. One thing is certain. President Obama's strategies worked. Bush's didn't.

Want to tell us how they got that intelligence sasquatch? We didnt just receive it like signing for a UPS package. You guys have been wanting the us out of that area for years and now you are going to take credit for something good that happens while at the same time always blaming bush for all the bad things happening like the economy, etc. Obama continued bushs policies, accept it.

They got the intelligence in August? What took them so long to act?

I haven't wanted us out of that area at all. In fact, I've been critical of lack of attention paid to the area. And, no, Obama didn't continue the policies of President Bush in that he increased the troop strength and drone attacks in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Anyone that says they know for sure how we got the intelligence is a complete liar. Think for a minute. Do you honestly think that information would be public? Sounds (once again) like some people are trying to win the argument. Such children...

Very true, I don't believe Bush violated Pakistani sovereignty once. You have to go back to Nixon for a President that ordered [illegal] operations in a neighboring country to the one we were fighting in. Then again, we did invade Afg because they were harboring bin Laden, so that Pakis can't complain too loudly. In all honesty, I don't expect the current Pakistani govt to come out of this well - so all you lefties so eager for regime change, you can bet that is your next project.
