Responsible Gun Owner?

Florida man mistakenly shoots himself during road rage incident

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the man said he had been driving toward Orlando on Interstate-4 when another driver allegedly flashed a weapon after the two had some type of altercation. To protect himself, the man brandished his own handgun, causing it to discharge into his leg.

I thought that good guys with guns saved the day and were very careful with their firearms.

Who said anything about getting rid of guns? I'm merely pointing out the occasions where a good guy with a gun doesn't work. I thought that good guys with guns was the answer.

NMN, less is more:)

And never pointing out the occasions where a good guy with a gun stopped a crime.

That's pure cherry picking; lying by omission. And there can only be one reason:

"OMG! We must get rid of all guns Right F'n Now!!!"

Okay, in your case, by degrees.

"This didn't work. Ban more guns!!!" Repeat until "all guns" is accomplished.

To what end are you 'merely pointing'? What's your end game?

I think the whole "good guy with a gun" meme is really a call for more armed civilians. Considering that, in general, our society has demonstrated that they are not competent to handle guns (30K deaths a year), increasing the number of armed civilians is a bad idea. Having gun bloggers walking around schools might be enough to push me to buy a gun considering how unstable you guys are.

Further, the current laws are not working either because of poor enforcement or loopholes that allow people to have guns that shouldn't. I'd like to see us move more towards a system like Israel's where the truly responsible people have guns and the rest don't. People should be checked regularly for mental health issues and demonstrate a need more than just the adolescent "I want one."

This shouldn't be a problem for you folks in the gun cult, right? You are all responsible and could use new laws to start your own local armory or militia. I mean, unless you have some sort of mental illness issue or criminal record that would prevent you from continuing to carry guns. If that's the case, you shouldn't have them anyway. Cue the pathological hatred of the United States government....

Fully 2/3 of that number are suicides, deliberate self-shootings in which case competence in handling a firearm isn't a factor. The vast majority of the rest are deliberate shootings of others, again not a category in which competence in handling a firearms is a factor. At least not to any reasonably intelligent person.

increasing the number of armed civilians is a bad idea

Based on what? The firearms murder rate falling almost by half since 1992 even as many more concealed carry licenses have been issued? You really want to argue that?

Having gun bloggers walking around schools might be enough to push me to buy a gun considering how unstable you guys are.

Based on what other than your fucked up fantasies and projection?

Further, the current laws are not working either because of poor enforcement or loopholes that allow people to have guns that shouldn't.

There's always a few. No policy, law, or enforcement is perfect. And yet the firearms murder rate has been falling for 25 years even as you and your shrill compatriots have been shrieking that there's going to be Wild West shoot-outs everywhere and ever-increasing torrents of blood running in the streets. And yet you and they have been completely wrong. You see day and proclaim it's night.

Cue the pathological hatred of the United States government....

You are complete and unadulterated fuckwit and liar.

Eastern Ind. police chief accidentally shoots self in leg

I'm merely pointing out the occasions where a good guy with a gun doesn't work. Obviously, current laws are not working either because of poor enforcement or loopholes that allow people to have guns that shouldn't. Apparently police officers might be such a category, following your logic and my links that you've ignored.

He didn't. Your reading comprehension is up to its usual dain-bramaged standards. The Christian "God" is different than some unspecified other "god". Surely a True Christian and a supposed teacher, no less, would know the difference between the capitalized God and some other god, which could be Zeus, Apollo, Mithra, Ganesha, etc.

Yeah, but you probably wouldn't pass the psychological check that you support...

No, we should require all gun owners to be licensed, pass regular proficiency exams and background checks, have their eyesight checked, and urge elderly gun owners to give up their guns, just as we urge elderly drivers to stop driving when it's obvious they're no longer safe driving.

Whenever a gun owner is charged with DUI, has suicidal thoughts, threatens violence upon others, commits spousal abuse, or has a restraining order placed on them, they should be required to surrender their weapons.

All guns should be required to meet certain safety standards, such as not accidentally discharging when dropped. It shouldn't be possible for a gun to discharge when you're unloading it (which happens all the time). All guns should be required to be properly holstered and not jammed into purses, pockets or waistbands from which they will accidentally fall out and shoot innocent bystanders (which happens all the time).

Finally, there should be an all-out effort to design guns that can be fired only by the proper owner, not kids who find dad's gun, or criminals who ambush a cop from behind and steal his sidearm, both of which happen all the time.

The death rate from car accidents has declined markedly in the last 50 years because we require training, testing and licensing for drivers, have improved regulations and traffic laws, have increased the mechanical reliability of automobiles, installed numerous safety features in cars (seat belts, anti-lock brakes, crumple zones, etc.), constantly redesign traffic interchanges and intersections, and install and improve semaphores, signage and lighting, all in an effort to make driving safer.

If we took the same approach with guns we could drastically reduce the number of accidental deaths and suicides, without significantly reducing anyone's second amendment rights.

Responsible gun owners should get ahead of the curve and keep guns out of the hands of nut jobs and boneheads, before all the carnage starts a massive wave of public opinion against anyone with a gun.

By all means yes! Let's license guns JUST LIKE WE DO CARS.

Think about all that entails.

BTW, the Indiana police chief who accidently shot himself? It was the second time he's done that.

I'm glad cars are so safe that they can't roll forward while their driver hops out to do something, that they don't fly through red lights and stop signs while their driver isn't dealing with the fighting kids in the back seat, that they don't allow people underneath themselves unless they've properly and safely jacked with their wheels chocked. Oh what? Those are all acts of human stupidity? And all we need to do is ban human stupidity? Well, if that's what we've got to do, then that's what we've got to do. How simple it is.

Larry said...

is dealing with fighting kids, I mean.

Hey, Nikto, you dumbass. Accidental deaths of children from firearms has dropped even more than the car rate. Murder rate with firearms has dropped by half since 1992 aand is continueing to go down. Only utter fuckwits think we're not heading in the right direction.

Markadadelphia, this is much more like Nikto: Anti-Gun California Senator Makes a Fool of Himself (not that that's hard)

So much ignorance AND fear of the subject combined with babbling demagoguery (both the idiot Senator and our own idiot Nikto) is a terrible formula for legislation. But that won't stop them from trying. In fact, in their fevered emotion-driven minds, their own fear and ignorance lends a terrible moral urgency to their campaign.
