The Most Tears

I think the most tears I have shed this week have been about this man. I know there were people much younger than him that died but Liviu Librescu's story really got to me. A Holocaust survivor, Librescu held the door shut as his students jumped out the window. He brought them precious seconds as Cho shot through the door ultimately killing him.

The story of his life was the subject of an article on the Christian Science Monitor today. You can read it here.

What a man. What a person. What a hero. I can't help but wonder if the reason he survived all the hardships in his life was to save his student's lives in the year 2007. Simply amazing.

This may sound pretty insensitive, but, isn’t it a poor reflection on our society that in those first critical seconds where one has to make a decision, only an elderly Holocaust survivor, Professor Librescu, understood instinctively the obligation to act.

The shooter had to stop & reload several times. Why was Prof. Librescu, the only one to act? Have we become a nation of the meek & passive? This is not to say I wouldn’t have had the bejesus scared out of me being in that situation. Nor would I relish getting shot. But, if it’s 20 against 1, and people are dying, its time to rush the cockpit, folks. My old drill sergeant once said, you may be faced with a life or death situation some day and sometimes the only thing you can do is grab your balls and fight like there’s no tomorrow.

…and to be even a little less sensitive (but we’re hear to look at new ideas, right?), why is everyone acting like the victims are defenseless children? In any society in the world, people aged 18+ are adults. Perhaps because we coddle our youth to such a degree, they are so shocked with the horrors of real life showing up that they’re unable to act even out of self-preservation. We should be raising children to understand that there will be moments in life when you need to protect yourself and others. We do our children a disservice to raise them to entrust all to government’s security blanket.

Dave,

Please enter your secure location because the final sign of armageddon has been shown:

I agree with absolutely everything you wrote. Every single world.

And I don't think you are being insensitive at all. I think that the fact the Prof Librescu knew what to do signals the time he came from...he was tough in the face of fear, of violence...we have all become soft, docile, and eternally ADD. I have asked people the same questions you have and they have given me two responses

1. I am an insensitve fool.
2. If they kids had guns, then everything would've been alright.

There is no doubt in my mind I would've waited for him to reload, gotten a few folks together, and neutralized him. They are saying today that he fired 200 times. Are you kidding me? How many reloads is that? Good Lord...
