2008 Presidential Profile #1: John McCain

I used to like John McCain. Remember the cool mack daddy maverick who bitch-slapped W all over the joint in 2000? God, I miss that guy.

He's gone now and he's been replaced by this man (left), whom we see pictured with President Bush at a recent fundraising event in Arizona. He might look like John McCain, walk like John McCain, and even talk like John McCain but he sounds an awful lot like George W. Bush, especially when he talks about Iraq. To put it simply, Senator McCain has taken leave of his senses when it comes to the topic of the Iraq War. He believes every single thing that comes out of W's mouth about the war and is betting his whole campaign on it. He thinks the surge will work, that the insurgency is in its last throes, and all the Middle East really needs is a forced democracy. Good Lord.....

He also has been seen cozying up to Jerry Falwell, who he used to call a moron. So basically he has been spending his days running to the right which, in all likelihood, will cost him the election because most people (like me) loved him for his independent attitude. He claims that his convictions have been the same all along but we all know it really isn't true. A man who I thought capable of no bullshit has an enormous amount of it spewing forth from his mouth.

It is for that reason that, as a presidential hopeful goes, he gets a D.

Wednesday: Hillary Clinton

(I’m sure you’ve been eagerly awaiting my alternative grading system…)

John McCain: C+ (and rising)

McCain was simply a convenient weapon to beat on President Bush with and now that his usefulness has expired, he’s no longer a ‘maverick’, but a threat to the Democratic Party. An interesting dichotomy; I don’t see his message changing significantly, but I don't hand on his every word for comparison.

I love that he’s getting a bit crabby with detractors; shows more backbone than he’s had in years. (I’d tentatively say that he completely staged the “bomb, bomb Iran” song as a “look-tough” stance, copying Ronald Reagan’s famous “we start bombing in 10 minutes” quip.) But I’ve listened to him speak and he can’t articulate the GOP message. I wouldn’t vote for him in the primary…but I would vote for him against nearly any Democratic opponent.

You all might find this hard to believe but I really liked John McCain too. Maybe it's because he looks like my dad.

That has all worn off now that he is playing altar boy to Jerry Falwell, pure evil through and through, and now that he agrees with the Iraq plan.

I agree with your grade.

Irony…for all the reasons you dislike John McCain, I like him.

His book (movie?) was really something; awe inspiring tale of courage in the prison camp. But, judging by his reaction to the hoopla, he likes himself a bit too much.

Interesting twist: if Kerry comes back into the fold of presidential contenders and faces off against McCain; would Kerry run with the "war hero" matra that he did against Bush?

There is no denying McCain's heroic record of service. I would say if there was a way of measuring, McCain would be more heroic than Kerry. And I think Kerry was a hero.

That's what makes his stance on Iraq all the more puzzling. He knows how horrible war is and obviously has seen the continued deterioration in Iraq. Believe me, I have no problem with taking the fight to the enemy. I think is Iraq the wrong place and I really wonder why McCain thinks it is the right place based on so much evidence to the contrary.

OK, I guess I'll be the one to say it. John McCain is too old. He is 71 and would be 73 when he took office. There are things I like about him, especially his support of rolling back the tax cuts on the rich and throwing out No Child Left Behind, but we really need someone who speaks to this generation.
