Ferraro's Foolishness

The really sad thing about Geraldine Ferraro is that she has cancer. Multiple myeloma in fact. In typical fashion, the media has not really reported this, focusing instead on her comments regarding Barack Obama and race. When one suffers from MM as long as she has (10 years), the amount of drugs you take really exacts a toll on your system. In fact, it has been proven to alter your moods and mental state. You are also in a great deal of physical pain constantly. I know this from personal experience as my mother in law suffers from this. It is horrible.

So, I guess I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the bizarre statements she has made in the last few days regarding why Barack Obama is doing as well as he is in the election. I really have my doubts that she is racist. Out of her mind and out of touch, partially due to drugs? Yes.

Racist? No.

The smell in the air is chickenshit. What a weak explanation.

So sensitive....

I know someone as well who has this type of cancer. When she was taking her meds, she would think that her neighbors were sneaking into her house and having parties without her.

VHeights said on this blog some time back, (speaking about Ann Coulter) "you can tell she just wants to call Obama a ni&&er", and 2 posts later truthgirl agreed with her.

Now you’re both on here easily explaining away these comments? Bwaaahaahaahaaaa - thanks for the laugh.

Try being consistent in your outrage over words (or in vheights case, alleged thoughts) regarding race. Vheights goes after someone who she “thinks” “wants” to make racist comments and then truthidiot easily explains away Geraldines comments simply because she is on medication.

July of 06, Phil said on this blog “Ooh, one more thing. Speaking of mindless talking heads, how can you not comment on Rush "prescription meds with no prescription" Limbaugh? I had no idea Viagra provided the same painkilling effects as Oxycontin”

Sensitivity? yeah right. It’s only an outrage when you folks disagree with them politically. When politics is your religion,

Why doesn’t anyone on here man up and tell us if they think geraldines comments were accurate? After that, be honest with us and tell us if you think McCain would still be the nominee at this point had he said those exact same words.

i REALLY dont understand what all the fuss is about. Now that it's down to the wire between Clinton and Obama, both sides are going to magnify the others' OBVIOUS slip-ups and silly mistakes ('clinton's a monster' - samantha power actually thought she could say that 'off the record' in a bbc interview, and 'If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position' -- by a very seasoned politician and former vice-presidential candidate, who said the SAME exact thing about Jesse Jackson in '88: "If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race," ) so, ofcourse it's not the drugs! It might be bitterness but it's pure politics, possibly mingled with some racism which always hits the spot with a certain number of americans.

it's a presidential campaign, winner takes all. Geraldine Ferraro was just saying what many average americans are probably thinking, that Obama's not up to the job, so (the logic goes) -- if he weren't black, he wouldn't be ahead right now. That's bs from all perspectives (in terms of QUALIFICATION for being ahead i mean) Kennedy was YOUNGER than Obama so his age doesn't make him less qualified, he's a lot better educated than Clinton who failed her Bar Exams, and how being First Lady makes you ready on Day One to be Military Commander in Chief and a Foreign Policy Expert is perplexing -- the two jobs are very different.

Ferraro's comment was crass and below the belt, but so what, it's a legitimate attack in a dirty race.

As if being black was suddenly an ALL-PLUS!!!! That's a big joke to every single black person in America 90% who has to put in double the effort daily have to prove themselves with many white colleagues - or they drop out of the unfair system and take the exit route. SURE, it's an asset in black-majority states, but ONLY because Obama proved he had the charisma education and talent to woo over the powerful rich and interesting white folks too, which made blacks believe in him more. Being black is both good and bad for Obama in this race, it's going to prove a major hurdle for him in insulated majority white heartlands.

Ferraro thought she was being clever on Clinton's behalf, and the Clinton Campaign knows EXACTLY what it's doing when it tries to undermine its opponent, but it boomeranged big time, that's all. JT (not anonymous)

JD, I don't think Ferraro's comments were accurate. I do think they were racist but I also stand by what I wrote in today's post. She is not quite in her right mind and the press is not talking about that.

Do you really want to bring Rush into this discussion? Not a good idea at all.

I was thinking about the same thing jd said in that last paragraph. Would McCain still be the nominee had he said it?

john mccain would never say that, he may be unpredicatble, but he's intelligent and a politician.

in the same way clinton would never say it herself (although her hubbie and consultants would for her) in the same way obama would never come out and say what he really thinks of clinton. only the 'Consiglieri' voice controversial remarks that they feel might ring true amongst a lot of americans.

if mccain DID ever bring up colour in the way ferraro did (i dont think he will) he'd get non stop grief from the media for 48 hours, and open himself up to alienating obama's wealthier corporate benefactors who could become his bankers, should hilary get the democratic nomination, not to mention making himself a target for remarks about being too old, too 'establishment' and too cranky for the job.
