Sitting in Wonder

From AP.

The Pentagon's personnel chief said Tuesday the military has completed its best recruiting year since 1973, meeting all its goals and bringing in a better educated group of young people.

The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps met goals for active duty and reserve recruiting during the budget year ended Sept. 30 — the first time that has happened since the all-volunteer force was established, said Defense Department head of personnel Bill Carr.

Hmmph. Now I wonder why that is? Could it be anything at all to do with having a president who actually takes his time in deciding whether or not to send troops into harm's way? One that cares about the troops and their families?

One that respects them and their sacrifice?

People are out of work ya bone head. The service gives them 3 square meals and place to sleep. A doctor to see and a paycheck.

Funny how it never occured to M that nearly 10% unemployment might help military recruiting.

Nah, it's all because every new recruit idolizes Obama, that's just gotta be it.

Fellas, what you both just said could not possibly be true because Mark has already made up his mind on this one.

Well, I haven't made up my mind...that's why I asked the question. But there's NO way it could have anything to do with President Obama, though, right?

I think the economic factor is a much larger issue than any personal regard for the president. After all, doesn't the left traditionally hate anything to do with the military? I don't see that attitude changing much regardless of who is in power.

You weren't asking those questions with the intent of getting an answer. You were asking them tounge-in-cheek with your conclusion buried in them. Don't deny it.

If a recruit gave me five reasons, I would be rather surprised if this one was on the list at all, let alone above 4. You obviously have never been pitched by a military recruiter - polishing the President's creds isn't usually part of the spiel.

Sorry if that interfers with YOUR hero worship.

I'd guess it was a down economy and the fact that we're drawing down in Iraq, which means new recruits are less likely to see action. For most of the year Afghanistan wasn't a big consideration, though it's looming larger now.

A small part of some recruits' consideration might be that they think Obama is less likely to start something big and ugly.

Another part of the equation might be that recruiting goals may be lower than they otherwise might have been had we not started pulling out of Iraq. We could check that be finding out what the actual recruitment goals were for the past few years.

But really, we have to thank George Bush's incompetent regulators, the slime balls who suckered millions into mortgages they couldn't afford and the masters of the universe on Wall Street who escalated the real estate bubble into a financial Chernobyl.
