Sad Day

The former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated today in Pakistan. She was shot in the neck by an attacker who promptly blew himself up and killed 22 other people at a rally.

As I have said on many, many occasions, the situation in Pakistan is getting worse everyday. It is the most dangerous country on the planet right now and I don't know about you but I don't feel very comfortable in our current leadership's ability to handle what comes next.

If I were president, I would re-deploy at least several thousand troops from Iraq to Afghanistan at best possible speed. Pakistan is a powder keg, ripe for takeover by Al Qaeda. We have got to start addressing this situation seriously.

Yeah Mark. Pakistan is the most immediate threat to our security. It's laughable that all GOP -with the exception of Ron Paul- describe Iran as the real threat.. laughable.

Al Queda has this raw video game they've made and handed out to youth that has them capturing nukes from Pakistan.
Might get really ugly.

New reports were that no bullets actually hit her... ???? [per faux]

Yeah, I just saw that. I really think there needs to be a more forceful political, economic, and military effort in Pakistan beginning yesterday.

Pakistan never attacked us though. Just wanting you folks to abide by the same standards you hold others to.

While it's true that Pakistan didn't send Al Qaeda cell members to the US, they allowed the Taliban and Al Qaeda to operate in Afghanistan and Western Pakistan without interference even after the US embassy bombings in African and the bombing of the USS Cole. Even after 9/11 Pakistan didn't to go against the Taliban. We had to threaten Musharraf -- according to the man himself -- with total devastation to get him to cooperate with us.

We are in almost the same position today with Musharraf and Pakistan that we were in with Saddam and Iraq in the 1980s.

Then we were supporting a dictator who was fighting a war against Iran. Now we are supporting a dictator who is (supposedly) fighting a war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

The major difference is that there was no questioning Saddam's commitment to battle Iran -- he was their deadliest enemy.

Today, however, there are many elements in the Pakistani government that have consistently supported the Taliban and Al Qaeda since the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, even to this day.

Does Musharraf? It is hard to say for sure -- he talks a big game about fighting terrorists, but he has cut a peace deal with the Taliban, so it seems he is just blustering. There have been failed attempts on his life blamed on the Taliban. Real? Window dressing? Staged by someone else and blamed on the Taliban to give Musharraf cred with us? Who knows?

The Taliban is growing stronger every day in Afghanistan, fueled by invaders from Pakistan. Even if Musharraf isn't actively consorting with the enemy, he is completely ineffective fighting them.

We should immediately condemn this dictator and stop all military aid to Pakistan. But the unspoken truth in Bush's missile defense system is that it is designed to protect us from Pakistan -- they're the only country with nuclear missiles that we possibly hope to stop.

Musharraf seems to be playing us against the Taliban, pretending to help us while trying to maintain a delicate balance with forces in his own country that will destroy him if he actually delivers on his promises to us.

This is not an ally that we need.

"Pakistan never attacked us though. Just wanting you folks to abide by the same standards you hold others to."

This statement is sub moronic. Pakistan is harboring Al Qaeda, albeit unwillingly. We need to work with their army and wipe out those areas of the countries, largely uncontrolled by the government, that are harboring the people who actually attacked us on 9-11.

Iraq did not attack us on 9-11 so when you speak of "standards" it should begin and end with pursuing our actual enemies as opposed to those who prevent certain people from getting the oil they want i.e made up ones.

Iraq didn't attack us? Thanks Captain Obvious.

We need to wipe out those areas of Pakistan? Is everyone in those areas of Pakistan Al Queda?

You people are calling for our military to go into another country. Run that by the "bring the troops home now" crowd.

Yeah, you've all figured it out by surfing the internet from your homes. Whatever.

You get dizzy when you search the internet for answers. I've heard Bhutto say that Bin Laden was murdered in late 2001 early 2002 by Omar Sheikh- an ISI & Al Queda double agent who also murdered Daniel Pearl. It's a really confusing situation that leaves me baffled.
