Liberal Media Watch

The media is all liberally biased, right?

"GOP hopes rekindled" (headline from MSNBC)

"Blow to Obama" (headline from MSNBC)

"GOP Scores Big on Election Night" (headline from CNN)

"GOP Rules Election Night" (headline from CNN)

"Setback to Obama" (NY Times headline)

"Victories seen as a sharp blow to Democrats and showed the limits of President Obama's political clout." (Comcast News headline)

Hmm...I thought the media were in the tank for President Obama. It couldn't possibly be they just want to SELL something...anything....no matter who their audience is, now could it?

This same "liberal media" has also buried the story of the loss by the Republicans in NY-23. Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck all got behind the "real" conservative, Doug Hoffman. It was quite a scene of GOP infighting which resulted in the election of a Democrat, Bill Owens -- the first Democratic congressman from that region since Ulysses S Grant was president. In fact, the "fake" Republican, Dede Scozzafava, that was forced to drop out of the race by the psychotics that are currently running the GOP ended up backing Owens. Huh. Isn't that interesting? Perhaps there aren't as many "real" Republicans out there as Rush, Glenn, and Sara would like to think. How sad...

Anyway, I don't buy into the media's "The GOP Are Back!!!" meme. If they were, NY -23 would be in Hoffman's hands. As it stands, a very conservative state (VA) voted for a Republican (gosh, what a shock) and New Jersey voted out the guy who was up to his eyeballs in Goldman Sachs kickbacks. Whoopity Doo!

Thinking that the Republicans are dead in the water is a mistake. Unless they change the way their party operates they will probably wither away in the next 20-30 years due to demographic shifts. But they are still here right now, and they will still be dangerous next year, and two years after that.

These results are typical of an off-year election. Non-partisan Americans don't like to see power concentrated in the hands of one party for long. This worked fairly well when both parties were reasonable, but when the Republicans went off the deep end in the eighties it spelled real trouble for this country.

The win by Democrat Bill Owens in a historically Republican district in New York is not so clear cut. The guy Limbaugh et al. endorsed didn't even live in the district. The Republican who left the race, Scozzofava, endorsed the Democrat. This being New York, it's not surprising that the Republicans will reject the demands of the far-right blowhards.

But it certainly does show that Beck and Limbaugh and Palin aren't the kingmakers they pretend to be. Non-partisan Americans don't take their marching orders from anyone. And it's best to remember that these independents are the ones who decide nearly every big election in this country.

Election results aren’t to my liking, hey look – it’s the media.

"Perhaps there aren't as many "real" Republicans out there as Rush, Glenn, and Sara would like to think." "But it certainly does show that Beck and Limbaugh and Palin aren't the kingmakers they pretend to be."

or maybe they aren't the kingmakers that Mark makes them out to be. The results in NY23 sure disproves one of the major themes on this blog – that Palin, Rush, Beck, etc control all things Republican as well as the country as a whole.

So what good is Owens going to do for you all, your healthcare bill is stuck with or without him. Also, did you familiarize yourself with Owens? Would you all describe him as fairly conservative or fairly liberal?

Gay Marriage failed in Maine? Who are you guys going to blame? Can’t blame blacks in California, can’t blame Mormons or Southerners either. Quick! Find somebody or something to blame! Maine is a very blue state after all. What went wrong? Analysis please...

Both newly elected governors were elected in states that voted for Obama last year. Obama beat McCain in Virginia by 13 points. Christie beat Corzine by four points in a state that went for Obama by 15 points — and where a Republican hadn’t won in over ten years. The New Jersey election even had a third party candidate taking votes away from Christie. Obama campaigned heavily for Corzine, calling him his "partner" and putting his prestige on the line. Joe Biden made a couple of campaign appearances, too, and the White House supervised the campaign in the final weeks.

Think any democrats out there realized on Tuesday night that Obama isn’t going to get them re-elected? Perhaps being the President’s "partner" on his agenda may not be a winning position; it wasn’t for Corzine in what should have been a secure blue state and Corzine spent millions and millions of his own dollars. Not to mention Corzine applied tried, true, and failed Democratic policies to New Jersey. Higher taxes and higher spending – not exactly a recipe for economic recovery. Under a heavy burden of income and property taxes in a recessionary economy, even the bluest of blue states will cry uncle.

Looking at the numbers, the GOP did very well in Westchester County, the Connecticut coast, Bergen County, N.J. and Fairfax, Loudon, and Prince William County in Va. Perhaps the moneyed suburbs have discovered that they're not quite moneyed enough to be able to afford the bills that congress is debating as we speak. Virginia's southwestern ninth district, long represented in Congress by Democrat Rick Boucher, went 67% for McDonnell - probably over the prospect of a cap-and-trade energy tax that will kill off the coal production that underlies the region's economy. For the first time in decades one part of this United Mine Workers stronghold also elected a Republican, Will Morefield, to Virginia's House of Delegates.

I’m not sure where the whole "no democrat rep since the civil war" propaganda came from but you all bought it hook, line and sinker. Just google it folks...did you all really just accept that whole meme that has been floating around the internet for the past 2 days as fact without looking into it? How many of you readers accepted it as fact as well? Rep. Michael McNulty-D served as the democrat Congressional representative to New York-23 from 1989 till 1993. McNulty is alive and well, still sitting in the current 111st congress (but in another district). Familiarize yourself with the names Samuel Stratton, a democrat who represented NY23 from 1983 – 1989, then Peter Peyser, a democrat who represented the NY23 from 1979 – 1983, then Jonathan Bingham, Charles Buckley, Jacob Gilbert, Isidore Dollinger, Sidney Fine, Walter Lynch, and Frank Oliver...all Democrats who represented NY23 from 1923 – 1973.
