Meet the 99 Percent (Part 1 of Many)

Now that the Occupy Wall Street is getting national attention and support from a substantial number of Americans, it's time for the douche bag propaganda machine to go to work. The 99 percenters are violent drug dealing fornicators bent on redistributing income and creating a socialist regime that will send us all to reeducation camps.

In reality, they are this.

ATLANTA
Oliver Beinlich, 29 | Unemployed

"There are a lot of issues in this country that need to be addressed. This is one way of voicing our concerns - there are many interests represented here, but I think the overarching message here is that we want to get our country back from the overwhelming power that corporations have."

Far more than they should, Oliver.

Look, Mark, AS YOU'VE BEEN TOLD REPEATEDLY, many (most? all?) of us here on this site agree with a good number of the protesters complaints. We do, however, disagree with with many of the protesters' proposed solutions -- at least insofar as they can be determined from the incoherent jumble coming from them.

But it's highly entertaining that the very first protester highlighted at your link, Tim Franzen, 34, employed (doing what, one might idly wonder, though unless he's a paid professional protester, it really doesn't matter) says, "A lot of people were very frustrated with George Bush, and we put a lot of energy into the Obama campaign. We heard a lot about hope and change, and we've barely got any change, and barely any hope. We've lost all hope in the political process." BTW, a little Googling shows Franzen is a professional "community organizer" and activist.

Which meshes quite nicely with what I've said before: if these people had any real understanding of the problem, they'd also be protesting at the White House, Congress, Treasury, etc., and campaigning against the current Goldman-Sachs Administration. Instead of camping out in parks, banging drums and generally making themselves an increasingly disliked nuisance to their neighbors.

That said, I think the mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, made a big mistake when he ordered the "occupation" closed because of a report someone had an "assault rifle" (that almost certainly was not). Unless Atlanta has some bullshit law prohibiting open carry, that was wrong.

You want to have a discussion about professional activists?:)

they'd also be protesting at the White House, Congress, Treasury, etc.,

Well, that's a fruitless endeavor because they see the government as a tool of corporate america. To a certain extent they are correct but I part ways with them because I think the government can still be an effective framework in which to get a lot done. Obviously, you disagree.

(1) So just what are they trying to accomplish?

(2) How do they propose to get it done?

(3) How does what they're doing now relate to (1) and (2)?

There seems to be more than a little bit of Underpants Gnomes logic going on here.

All valid questions, Larry, and I think they are going to have to answer them sooner or later. They need to begin to narrow their focus or they do risk implosion.

I do think that they are under the impression, though, that they can facilitate change from the people. The giant obstacle standing in their way is the monstrous apathy and sloth that exists in this nation. I hope I'm wrong, though!

Who is they? You mean you don't speak for them anymore?
