What is Exactly Wrong With This Country

Someone knows checkers than they know chess. Pawns can be promoted to king only in some non-standard variants such as suicide chess. Pawns hope to become queens. It's so sad to see such a hopeful metaphor dashed to pieces upon the rocks of reality.

Is that why you work hard (assuming you do) M - so that you get to be king?

Oh, no of course not - that is what all those other [stupid, icky, false-consciousness] people do. Right?

No. I'm an overpaid missionary, remember? This cartoon is a wonderful illustration of the massive illusion that people live under today. Many people believe that they will work hard and be entitled as a king. But the fact is it will likely never happen. Yet our culture continues to perpetuate the myth.

What ARE your views on hard work then?

What advice do you give young people these days?

I agree that hard work doesn't ENTITLE anyone to be a king but I think that working hard does pay dividends. Working smart is even better.

At least according to the voices in your head. Talk about massive illusions!

Let's do a quick recap. I don't believe this to be true for myself. You don't believe this to be true for yourself. But you insist it is true for lots of other people. Because...

I agree. My advice to younger people or anyone really is to learn how to manage the complexities, meaning dedication and diligence.

But you insist it is true for lots of other people. Because...

...much of the Republican base are working class people who think this is real.

And this you know because...

And we're back to me getting shit for the fact that you don't get out much.

And all of these people tell you that they are hardworking, working-class Republicans that despise your brand of liberalism but believe they will get to be king through their hardwork.

Seriously I don't do much to make you look ridiculuous - other than ask questions. You do all the heavy lifting.

It's not just the people I know but it's everyone in the conservative base. They are very protective of wealthy people which I understand if they themselves are wealthy. Most aren't though and they mistakenly think that they are going to be king someday and, when they are, they sure as shit don't want the gubmint taking the fruits of their labors!!! An example of someone I don't know who believes this garbage is Joe the Plumber. He bitched to Obama about wealth redistribution because he thought that he was going to be a wealthy small business owner. He did end up wealthy, though, when he realized that there was a much larger group of people wanting something other than plumbing services:)

Uh-huh, because you have surveyed the minds of everyone in the conservative base. You have talked to all of them, and thus you know this.

Or, this is what the voices in your head tell you?
