A Suspect?

CNN is reporting that they have video of a dark skinned male placing a bag at the site of the second bombing. He is considered a suspect in the Boston Marathon Bombing.

It looks like CNN jumped the gun on this one. There are conflicting reports: another one says they're looking for a white guy.

I can't understand the impulse of the media to speculate and report things that are just rumors, especially something like this which could warn the suspect that the authorities are just about to scoop him up, letting him escape.

It reminds me of the bombing in Centennial Park at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, which is quite similar to the Boston attack. A few days after the bombing they started to blame the security guard, Richard Jewell, who found the device and helped clear the area.

People claimed he was a wannabe hero who manufactured the incident to make himself look good.

In the end it turned out a right-wing nut named Eric Rudolph did it. He also bombed a lesbian bar and an abortion clinic. Rudolph wasn't even identified as a suspect until 1998, and hid out in the woods until his capture in 2003.

Something I hadn't heard before: Rudolph's older brother Daniel "sent a message" to the FBI by cutting off his own hand with a circular saw shortly after Eric was identified as a suspect.
