So what is a ‘draft dodger’? It’s not someone who received a legitimate and legal deferment from military service, Schuback said.



"A draft dodger is someone who got drafted and has then fled, or it also might be a person who made a statement by not registering (for the draft)," he explained.

With the War in Vietnam, the meaning of "draft dodger" expanded to include those who chose one of many legal alternatives to being drafted to go to Vietnam such as repeated education deferments, serving in some National Guard unit that was not going to go anywhere (the choice of most pro athletes), using some physical ailment to become 4F, etc, etc If one did enough research, there were plenty of legal alternatives to fleeing to Canada.
