The List

My friend Scott from the gym (an ultra conservative) made me promise him that I put this on the blog. He never reads it, barely checks email, yet was insistent that his thoughts be known to all of you. So, without further adieu, here is The List, by Scott, of the people/organizations that are destroying our country from within and without followed by a short explanation as to why this is so.

1. The Liberal Media-all of it is liberal including Fox News now. They seek to spread lies.

2. The Hollywood Elite-Scott hasn't seen a film since Titanic (or so he claims) because he refuses to fund the liberal agenda of Hollywood.

3. Democrats-well, we know why this is here.

4. Socialists/Communists-actually, just see #3.

5. Teachers-all liberal commie pinko faggots...thanks Scott!

6. Climate Changers/Environmentalists-they're all looney and want to take Scott's money.

7. Affirmative Action Supporters-taking away jobs from people who are more qualified. Also part of a commie plot.

8. ACLU-against all that is good and Holy about our country.

9. Unions-commies

10. U.N.-Anti American to the core.

11. Illegal Immigrants-go home. We don't want you.

12. RINOS-Republicans who, in any way whatsoever, support any of them previous 11 items.

Note: This list is real and Scott was very insistent that I put it down exactly like I did.

According to the president’s budget, the federal deficit for 2010 is expected to reach a record $1.6 trillion. That would come on top of a $1.4-trillion deficit in 2009 and before a $1.3-trillion deficit in 2011.

Between 1789 and 2008, the U.S. government borrowed a total of $5.8 trillion. In just the first three years of the Obama administration, the government is set borrow $4.3 trillion. And if the Obama budget is adopted in full, federal borrowing will top $18 trillion by 2020.

“We simply cannot continue to spend as if deficits don't have consequences, as if waste doesn't matter, as if the hard-earned tax dollars of the American people can be treated like Monopoly money, as if we can ignore this challenge for another generation. We can't. In order to meet this challenge, I welcome any idea from Democrats and Republicans. What I will not welcome, what I reject, is the same old grandstanding when the cameras are on and the same irresponsible budget policies when the cameras are off. It's time to hold Washington to the same standards families and businesses hold themselves. It's time to save what we can, spend where we must, and live within our means once again.” – President Obama

Mark's Conservative Friend (MCS) - a strawman for when you can't be bothered to contend the points the "conservatives" on your blog make.

And at TSM, too.

Scott would be happy to meet any of you at any time. He enjoys finding more conservatives to help him pile on me.

Republicans are always complaining about the deficit, but when they have a man in the White House the deficit inevitably grows larger. It grew drastically under Reagan and Bush.

It then went away under Clinton.

It then ballooned again under Bush, with him running two wars off budget, one of which was completely unnecessary and has only caused more terrorism (to wit: Fort Hood, the underwear bomber), huge tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and the welfare program for drug companies known as the Medicare drug benefit. Bush also instituted the bailout for bankers and the bogus No Child Left Behind.

Now, some of those things were necessary and/or good, but even when they were the details caused bigger deficits than they should have (like prohibiting negotiations for drug prices, and requiring no changes in behavior from Wall Street bankers who got bailed out). But he and his fellow Republicans are completely irresponsible because they absolutely refuse to even consider any kind of tax increases, even when they're fighting wars or dramatically increasing benefits to Americans.

If something is good, or you have to do it, you have to pay for it. If we had paid for these things when the economy was doing well, the deficit would be much smaller now. And if we had actually kept running the Clinton surplus, we would have had a cushion to help us through this nasty recession.

Bottom line: Republicans simply cannot balance the budget. They are fiscally incompetent. They will not make any hard choices, they can only chant slogans and wangle sweet-heart deals for their corporate overlords.

"Fiscally incompetent." Dear God. This administration makes them look like frigging pikers. Your essay's all well and good, blk, but you completely glossed over the elephant in the room. Look at the numbers in the first post. I suppose they're Bush's fault too?

BLK, I’m sure you get this a bunch, but…you’re frickin’ nuttier than squirrel droppings.

When presented w/ hard numbers on the budget deficit for a Democrat congress with a Democrat presidency, you’re only recourse is to reflect on a comparatively trivial budget deficit from a Democrat Congress w/ a Republican presidency (whilst fighting 2 wars, a dotcom bust and a series of economy-shaking corporate scandals)? HELLO…I…I can’t even find the appropriate adjective…I’m gobsmacked.

Trivia time, kids…who controls the purse strings of government? Say, it with me, now…C_O_N_G_R_E_S_S.

This article is so-so, but note the graph in the left column on budget deficits by GDP by year compiled by the Office of Management and Budget…
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2010-02-01-budget-analysis_N.htm

To help you figure it out; here’s a little ditty on who’s controlled branches of gov’t so you can correlate w/ the above graph.
http://uspolitics.about.com/od/usgovernment/l/bl_party_division_2.htm

Notice anything? It’s not a perfect relation, but should provide a nice little guide.

Republican spending should leave them ashamed. Current Democrat spending beggars the imagination.

You’ve amply established your views on business, but since the only resources the gov’t has are the resources it takes from the private sector, using said resources to create jobs means reducing the resources available to create jobs in the private sector. Whatever will you do when everyone works for the government?

It then went away under Clinton.

Oddly enough only when he had a Republican Congress.

Maybe that's the ticket, a Dem in the White House and a Repub Congress. You sure as hell can't say any other combinations have been better in the last 30 years.
