Give This Man A Microphone

The United States military has formally charged Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin with failure to follow orders. Lakin has refused to report for a tour of duty to Afghanistan because he thinks that President Obama was not born here. He says he will report for duty when President Obama produces a birth certificate.

Not supporting our troops in Afghanistan, specifically by not giving them medical aid in the case of Lakin, is now being cheered by the Cult as a show of mental fortitude. Lakin has been making his rounds on the right wing talk show circuit and being lauded by notable felons like G. Gordon Liddy and Oliver North. I say that he should be given a speaking slot at the GOP convention this fall.

I think voters should see that, despite the fact that a birth certificate has been produced several times and that it doesn't matter if he was born in another country (he can still be a US citizen), this is how a "true patriot" is defined by the Cult.

That would be one who stands strong in his beliefs regardless of the facts.

Yeah, whatever happened to supporting the president in a time of war?

After Al Gore won the popular vote by more than half a million votes, many questionable occurrences in Florida and an obviously partisan Supreme Court decision in favor of Bush, he stood down and moved on. What was decided was decided. Many Americans were outraged, but that pretty much went by the wayside after a short time.

But the 2008 election stings some on the right so much more because Obama won it by such a large majority that it's clear the election was won fair and square. So the only way some on the right appear to be able to explain this is that somehow Obama isn't a "real" American.

Now the outrage on the right is still boiling, more than a year after the election, over a totally bogus issue. Because the right isn't mad about losing the last election, they're afraid of losing control completely. Demographics show that within 20-40 years fat old white guys and their enablers are going to be an insignificant minority in this country. That's what they really mean when they scream about losing the country. They mean they aren't running the show anymore.

The writing is on the wall. Instead of greeting change with hate, engage it and steer in a direction that allows the country to come together harmoniously. What's happening now isn't any different than what's happened over the last 250 years with other waves of immigration: the Irish, Germans, Chinese, Hungarians, Poles, Norwegians, Swedes, and so on.

The same things people are saying about Muslim, Somali and Mexican immigrants today were said about Catholic, Italian and Scandinavian immigrants a hundred years ago. Call it racism, call it tribalism, call it fear of change. It all amounts to the same thing.

LOL. No really, I laughed out loud. How perfect that blk would claim to know the outrage of the right regarding the 2008 election "more than a year after the election". Perhaps he didn't read his own second paragraph expressing his outrage regarding the 2000 election.

Personally, I think Obama was probably born in Hawaii. In any case, doubts after he has been holding the office are pretty much moot.

And as long as we are claiming to know someone else's 'true' motives (based on our incredible ESP powers, I guess), I'll bet all liberals who say "fat old white guys" are weight-discriminating, age-discriminating, racist, misandrists. Oh, and Nazis.

Thanks for the laugh, I needed one.

the fact that a birth certificate has been produced several times and that it doesn't matter if he was born in another country (he can still be a US citizen)

Well, as long as we're talking facts here...

First, there are differences, legal and constitutional, between a US citizen, naturalized citizen and natural born citizen. So your blanket statement, while technically true, ignores several layers of variables. Either you are ignorant of the facts or you are being intellectually dishonest.

Second, a certified copy of his birth certificate has not been produced. What has been produced is a certification of live birth, or what Hawaii calls a Letter of verification. Said letter of verification;

Letters of verification may be issued in lieu of certified copies (HRS §338-14.3). This document verifies the existence of a birth/death/marriage/divorce certificate on file with the Department of Health and any other information that the applicant provides to be verified relating to the vital event. (For example, that a certain named individual was born on a certain date at a certain place.)

You got that? It is not a certified copy of his birth certificate. This is a document that the state department will not accept for purposes of getting a passport.

Please note, some short (abstract) versions of birth certificates may not be acceptable for passport purposes.

So what's the problem? Besides the utter irony of the most transparent administration evah! being as opaque as support hose?

This post lays out several differing scenario's:

Great, Mark. It was only a matter of time before a birther showed up.

Two questions for you, RW.

1. Where was John McCain born?

2. According to the law in Hawaii, why won't the original copy of his birth certificate be produced?

Just assuage his concerns Donald, as opposed to sarcastic dismissal. Don't answer his statement with other questions which are ultimately meaningless regarding the topic he brought up. Use facts to disprove his assertation, if you can. It is what honest debate is all about.

I've got to go out of town for a couple days Donald, so I'll throw this out there and see if you answered anything when I get back.

McCain was not born in the US, he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, the son of a Navy officer. His 'natural born' status raised serious constitutional questions, that have really never been definitively answered (since first attempted in 1790). However, congress did pass a non-binding resolution declaring his eligibility, for whatever that is worth.

Hawaii law allows Obama to release his birth certificate at any time. I don't know what law you may be referencing, but if you are insinuating that he can't get his own birth certificate due to state law.....

So why would he NOT release his birth certificate?

1) He wasn't born in Hawaii.

2) He was born in Hawaii, but under circumstances he'd rather not reveal.

3) He's just being a dick to fuck with people.

I can live with #3, I might do that myself.

Correct anything you see fit to Donald. I'll see it next week sometime.

OK Donald, in reverse order of your questions.

2. According to the law in Hawaii, why won't the original copy of his birth certificate be produced?

There is no reason it can't be. According to Hawaiian law:

A certified copy of a vital record (birth, death, marriage, or divorce certificate) is issued only to an applicant who has a direct and tangible interest in the record. The following persons are considered to have such an interest:

* the registrant (the person whom the record is concerned with);
* the registrant’s spouse;
* the registrant’s parent(s);....(plus others)

1. Where was John McCain born?

I think anon@1:08 gave a pretty good answer to that. I'll add that US code title 8 section 1403 enacted in 1937 says in part:

(a) Any person born in the Canal Zone on or after February 26, 1904,
and whether before or after the effective date of this chapter, whose
father or mother or both at the time of the birth of such person was or
is a citizen of the United States, is declared to be a citizen of the
United States.

You say I'm a birther - I don't think I am. I think Obama was born in Hawaii. I don't believe anything that would be revealed in Obama's birth certificate would in any way affect his eligibility to be president. I also think that if I have to get a certified copy of my actual long form birth certificate to get my passport, government job or security clearance then no less should be expected of a presidential candidate.

My question #2 was sort of a ruse. There is no long form or short form of birth certificates in Hawaii. The scanned image seen here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barack_Obama_citizenship_conspiracy_theories

IS his official birth certificate. This has been confirmed by numerous state officials and Janice Okubo. So the link you provided makes no sense given the information in the Wiki entry and the subsequent citations.

Glad to hear that you are not a birther!

Donald,

From the Hawaiian government's own web site:

"Birth certificates (Certificates of Live Birth and Certifications of Live Birth) and Certificates of Hawaiian Birth are the primary documents used to determine native Hawaiian qualification.

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands accepts both Certificates of Live Birth (original birth certificate) and Certifications of Live Birth because they are official government records documenting an individual’s birth. The Certificate of Live Birth generally has more information which is useful for genealogical purposes as compared to the Certification of Live Birth which is a computer-generated printout that provides specific details of a person’s birth. Although original birth certificates (Certificates of Live Birth) are preferred for their greater detail, the State Department of Health (DOH)
no longer issues Certificates of Live Birth. When a request is made for a copy of a birth certificate, the DOH issues a Certification of Live Birth."

There used to be a long and short form birth certificate. This was changed sometime around 1980. (Sorry, I don't remember the exact year.) Obama definitely has a long form birth certificate on file in with the Hawaiian Department of Health. They've confirmed that much.

Donald. So the way you were thinking has been shown to be incorrect, based on the facts you've chosen to support your position. Will you now ignore this topic and keep thinking the same thing? Will you find better facts that confirm your current opinion? Or will you follow the facts to an opinion that is defensible? Your call.

Question for the house:

Do supporters of a political party that lionizes Mao Zedong, Che Guevara and William Ayers have room to criticize the support of their opponents by "notable felons like _______?"
