Two Words

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed the "Show Me Your Papers, Jew" bill into law yesterday making it perfectly legal for police to stop any "Mexican looking" person on the street and ask for papers. If they don't have papers on their persons at all times, off to the gulag!

To any of you hypocritical douche bags who are whining about "fascist states" under Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi, I have one question for you: Why are you supporting the creation of one?

And two words for you:

"Fuck" and "Off."

Why bother revisiting this topic when you've left so many unanswered questions from the last time you posted about it? I guess it is a lot easier to Alinsky your opponents instead of debating your facts vs. theirs.
Your methods may be accepted by the pablum guzzling unwashed, but I think that here - in an attempt at an intellectual debate on the merits - you'll be ridiculed. As you should be.

Well M, what do you expect Arizona to do, when the Feds won't do anything? Just ignore that there are problems - like you do?

There is an irony here that you are missing. The people that tend to be the most vociferous critics about illegal immigration are also the people that violently oppose a national id card (which would tend to solve the issue about who is and who isn't here legitimately).

Personally I think we need to go to a system that allows Mexicans to come and work and then go home - freely, but with identification. We obviously as a country aren't willing to fore-go that source of cheap labor, and Mexicans benefit as individuals - though it does retard the reform of the Mexican govt and economy.

But hey, when you can just scream "fuck you" at the 'other side', why bother trying to express a more nuanced opinion.

What, if any, parts of current immigration law would you enforce, using what methods, and why?

We definitely need national immigration reform, but it is such a divisive issue at this point that I don't see how any good can come out of trying to resolve it now.

To a certain extent the sluggish economy has made the issue less pressing. I don't recall the exact figures, but illegal immigration has been down significantly in the last couple of years because the jobs just aren't there. Construction has been especially hard hit, and Hispanics are more concentrated in the building trades than other sectors of the economy (according to PBS Newshour).

That leads me to believe that just erecting a giant fence and punitive actions against individuals isn't the solution. Removing the economic incentive for illegal immigration is key. That can mean eliminating "attractive nuisance" jobs here, but perhaps a better solution is to foster job creation in places like Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala to encourage people to stay home in the first place.

Part of the problem is that there are so many nativist rabble-rousers using the legitimate issue of illegal immigration as a cover for their racism. You can tell who these guys are because they're always screaming about anchor babies, how "they" are here to steal our medical care, and get a free education, intentionally cause car accidents and spread disease.

But everyone who's against illegal (or legal) immigration is not automatically a racist. Immigrants cause downward wage pressures. Even if they aren't taking your job, they're taking some job, and that means fewer slots for everyone all around.

Big companies love this because they can use it as a threat to their employees. They also like immigrant labor -- especially immigrants on visas specifically granting employment -- because the employer is basically holding the employee hostage. These employees cannot organize or even complain about anything for fear of losing their job and thus their residency in this country.

The US has done so well for so long in part because of the steady influx of hard-working immigrants from around the world. Our legal immigration programs (like the student and H-1B visas) bring the best and brightest to this country. Much of our economic growth depends on population growth, and the birth rate isn't enough to foster the kind of growth companies like McDonalds, Coke, Pepsi, Reebok, etc., want to see. (We grow by consuming more, rather than by producing more, the way China does.)

But I'm afraid we're not going to be keeping the best and the brightest here for much longer. Chinese and Indian entrepreneurs are starting to go back home after learning all our tricks.

So the whole immigration issue is too prone to lies and manipulation all the way around. Trying to come up with a decent policy during crazy season will probably not end well. We saw how they treated health care reform. I can't imagine immigration reform will be any better.

Makadelphia,
You cut right to the chase in this piece. Granted, illegal immigration is a problem in Arizona and California especially. But Arizona's attempt to solve the problem is indeed too close to the "all Jews must wear yellow stars" edict that was issued in Germany in the 1930s, and it stinks just as badly.

I am adding your blog to my blogroll. Keep fighting, my friend.

So in short, there is no part of current immigration law you'd actually enforce.

It doesn't matter that the bill actually says race/ethnicity will not be considered sufficient reason to check someone, it's still blatant racism as far as you're concerned.

And of course you'll never see the opinions of conservatives who share your concerns, because such concerns are posted at sites like Hot Air, so you'll assume it's all lies without ever looking.

All that is trumped by your two words. And apparently that's the same two words you have for ranchers being murdered by drug dealers and gangsters.

Of course, the dead rancher is white and probably conservative, so he doesn't matter. They could all be murdered, and it wouldn't bother you a bit. Just like blacks being beaten by the SEIU, it doesn't fit your narrative so it never actually happened.

Good post dw, love it. They don't want to debate the issue, they just want to cuss at you, then move on.

Actually, the issue as Mark put it was whether or not people that bitch about fascism are fascists themselves by supporting this new immigration bill. This was not a post about immigration reform specifically.

Essentially, Mark is calling the Tea Baggers on their hypocritical bullshit and it is just that.

And exactly what hypocritical bullshit are we talking about? I don't claim to know that much about the tea party, and always like to have both sides of the story. Something freshly hypocritical, or standard political hypocritical?

Let's talk about hypocrits, shall we? Posted today:
http://www.moonbattery.com/archives/2010/04/democrats-to-am.html

The money quote:
"So, the Democrat position is, apparently, that illegal immigrants must never be asked to show ID, but it will be mandatory for American citizens. "

And your line is classic, mark:
"To any of you hypocritical douche bags who are whining about "fascist states" under Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi, I have one question for you: Why are you supporting the creation of one?"

Question pointed right back at you. You are truly a tool of the fools.
