Some people champion the rights of those they otherwise despise and would never otherwise associate with voluntarily solely in order to make themselves feel better about that fact. Harriet Beecher Stowe made exactly that point in Uncle Tom's Cabin about many New Englander's who opposed slavery. Actually, in her own way, I was impressed by how clearly she laid out what many of the problems that would plague America for generations even if/when slavery were to be abolished.
