"Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."

-Thomas Jefferson

The context of his life and times color that statement at all, juris? I think Jefferson would be not recognize much tyranny in our government today, despite the decades of liberal and progressive programs. As long as we are hauling out the Jefferson quotes...

There will be "a vast accession of strength from their younger recruits, who, having nothing in them of the feelings or principles of '76, now look to a single and splendid government of an aristocracy, founded on banking institutions, and monied incorporations under the guise and cloak of their favored branches of manufactures, commerce and navigation, riding and ruling over the plundered ploughman and beggared yeomanry."
