The Last Debate and the Current State of The Race

Tonight is the last presidential debate and the subject is foreign policy. My prediction is that not as many people will tune in as they did to the first two debates. The simple fact is that many Americans do not care that much about foreign policy (which I think is truly a drag) and are more focused on the economy and jobs. I'd look for each candidate to try to pivot back to domestic issues as much as they can.

In addition, I don't think there will be any surprises tonight and both candidates will likely come out even and that's just about where the race is at present. Take a look at the latest polls.

What a giant pile of muddled mess. At least in the national polls, the race is tied. But what about the states?

With Ohio, the president maintains around a 2 point lead. On election night, if the president wins Ohio, it's over. Actually, if he wins Virginia before the Ohio results are in, it's also over. Here's Virginia.

RCP Average10/4 - 10/18----48.048.0Tie

I'd like to see some more polls out of Virginia other than Rasmussen who doesn't call cell phones but this one is as much of a tie as anything can be with perhaps a slight edge to Romney. If Romney wins it, then the president pretty much has to win Ohio in order to get to 270.

Another odd state these days is New Hampshire which, with its mere 4 electoral votes, could be an early indicator of how either candidate is going to do on the night.

RCP Average10/9 - 10/21----48.447.4Obama +1.0

The latest poll from UNH is likely way off and I'm more inclined to think that it's pretty even with the president up slightly. I'd say this last debate really isn't going to make much of a difference with the polls. Nearly everyone has decided who they are going to vote for and some have already done so.
The one thing that I just keep shaking my head at is the "Do it again, only harder" mentality of the Right. We've seen what happens when we adopt conservative policies: our country was driven into a ditch. Now there are people that want to go back to that? Why? I think a lot of it has to do with Romney's campaign slogan versus the president's...it's "Believe" vs. "Forward."

This is perfectly exemplified by the guy that puzzles me the most...my pal, last in line. Obviously, I'm hoping he responds here but I just don't get how won't accept the fact the president essentially saved his 401K. He did a better job than President Bush on a score of issues and Mitt Romney has made it very clear he wants to go back to that.

I just don't get it.

No politician Saved my 401k. If you're referring to a lack of regulation or the wall street fatcats not being in jail for what they did, I'll spot you Jon Corzine. IMO, what he did in was Bernie Madoff territory and he isn't in jail either. That's my proof that the people you vote for are all talk and no action on the "reigning in wall street" conversation.

Someone on here should inform us why he isn't in jail.

Of course you don't understand Do it again harder - that would indicate a level of self awareness you have never demonstrated. Instead you project it onto others.

The whole Jon Corzine thing is just sour grapes. He's all you can talk about after all the rest of the BS that went on with the Right? Your defense is always to attack a Democrat. That's not a defense.

juris, there is no "do it again only harder" for Democrats. We've already done it and it works. There's no need to do it harder. With trickle down and supply side economics...tax cuts for the wealthy...hysterical spending cuts...they don't work and never have.

I wish I could say this was funny - but that kind of hypocrisy just stinks. That is a mighty putrid hunk of donkey you are so proudly fellating.

We've already done it and it works.

Genius has its limits, but stupidity knows no bounds.

It's just sour grapes because you can't tell us. You can keep talking about what democrats say, I'll talk about what they do. Thats not attacking a democrat, it's pointing out a fact.

Actually, it starts out with me talking about what conservatives do, then it's a quick pivot to jon corizine and (presto!), I'm magically the one avoiding things. You seem to have a real problem admitting fault, especially when it's so awful and abundantly clear.

Jon Corizine and Chris Dodd are exceptions to the rule. Nearly all of the GOP behave that way in terms of the financial sector. They don't want to regulate Wall Street and they have no problem with legalized fraud. It's rooted in their ideology and you continue to support them. If I lived in New Jersey or Connecticut, I wouldn't vote for either one of those guys because of what they did. But you would still vote for the "R" over the "D" if "R" did those same things. Don't blame me for your ideological intransigence.

If all Democrats were like Jon Corizine and Chris Dodd, why do they continually call for continued vigilance of Wall Street and higher taxes for the wealthy? No one on the Right supports either and I think it's a real drag that you don't call them out on it and, instead, avoid responsibility and blame the left for what ALL your guys do.

You seem frustrated.

You voted for John Kerry and publicly offered your support for him in 2004. I've seen the results of his perfectly timed stock trades in healthcare companies during the healthcare debate that made him hundreds of thousands of dollars. You supported him. But he has that D behind his name, just like Corzine, and that gets no attention from you.

They continually "call for it" because they know that all they need to do is pay lip service to the issue and they have you. Passing legislation works better than "calling for it", and even when the pass legislation, there is always a loophole the size of a dump truck that people like Corzine can get through.

Instead of pivoting to Conservatives, why don't you tell us why Obamas Justice Dept hasn't gone after Corzine. I only asked one question...and you obviously cant answer it. This is the justice dept put into place by the people you vote for. Maybe I'll go stand outside a polling place with a billy club on election day, no problems with that either.

Romney isn't even in my top 3 but I'll be going to vote for him. I'll even be willing to show my ID at the polling place to vote for him....now THATS serious!!!!!!!

I am. Your defense of the many mistakes made by conservatives is to redirect. You simply can't admit fault which is a real drag. Worse, your feelings about Democrats cloud the very real efforts they have made to improve both our public and private economy.

You once told me long ago that Democrats are all about feelings. Yet Romney, in not making your top 3, is still better than the president simply because the president is a Democrat. Never mind the facts about accomplishments. Romney's still better. There's no logic at all in this way of thinking.

>simply because the president is a Democrat.

Wrong. I don't like the fact that millions of people can just sign up for disability when their unemployment runs out. I also don't like the increased number of people on food stamps...something Obama could not refute every time Romney brought it up to him in the debates.

There's other things too. Busy here at work, no time to type much.

Mark Ward said...

The number of people on food stamps is a direct result of the recession which was not the president's fault. But this is what I mean about ignoring responsibility and shifting blame.

...ignoring responsibility and shifting blame.

As in, everything bad is Bush's fault and Obama isn't to blame for anything - even if he did it.
